Origin

The roots of Lorem Ipsum trace back to the 1st century BC, specifically to Marcus Tullius Cicero's philosophical work “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (On the Ends of Good and Evil). The text we now know as Lorem Ipsum is a scrambled and altered version of a passage from this treatise, beginning with the words “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...”

Interestingly, the transformation of Cicero's work into Lorem Ipsum remains somewhat mysterious. It's believed that an unknown printer in the 15th century scrambled parts of Cicero's text to make a type specimen book. This practice survived not only centuries of letter-by-letter typesetting, but also the leap into electronic typesetting in the 1960s.
